Die 10. Klassen in England

Our trip to England

In the week from 29th May to 4th June 57 students and five teachers had the possibility to visit England. We met at 8.40 p.m. on Saturday in the car park in front of our school. Our long journey started at 9.15 p.m. after all luggage had taken out of and put into the coach a second time because one boy had forgotten his identity card in his suitcase. We went by double-decker coach through the Netherlands and Belgium to Calais in France. From there our ferry crossed the English Channel to Dover. We arrived in Dover at 9.55 a.m.. We had planned to visit Dover Castle, but unfortunately it was not open to the public on that day. Then we continued our journey and stopped in Canterbury, an old and nice town in England. First we had time to go shopping and then we visited the Canterbury Tales at 2 p.m.. In the evening we arrived in Windsor, a town close to London where we met our host families. A lot of us made a very good choice with their host family. Others were out of luck. The day ended with the arrival in the houses of our host families. On the next day we went to Stratford upon Avon (after all people had got into the coach at three different meeting points). There we visited Anne Hathaway’s Cottage at 12 o’clock and Shakespeare’s Birthplace at 2 p.m.. Then we went to Warwick, where we walked around Warwick Castle. On Tuesday we went to the seaside town of Brighton. There we visited the Royal Pavilion. In the Royal Pavilion we had a guided tour in German. Then we had time to go shopping and to visit the sights of the town. After that we drove to Beachy Head where we went on a walk along the steep cliffs. On our way back to Windsor we got stuck in a traffic jam. Therefore we were two hours late at our host families. On Wednesday we went to Oxford where we visited the Sheldonian Theatre. Then we had free time. At half past one p.m. we visited the Bodleian Library. On our way back we made a stop in Windsor. There we looked at Windsor Castle. Then we went to Eton and visited the courtyard of the college of Eton. We returned to our host families at 7 p.m.. On Thursday we had to say goodbye to our host parents and went by our double-decker coach to London. At 9 a.m. we met our guide for the tour through the capital. After that there was enough time to go shopping on Oxford street or to visit places of interest. At 9 p.m. we started our journey back to Germany. At 11.55 p.m. we went by ferry from Dover to Calais. At 1.35 p.m. we arrived healthily, but tired at our school.
Finally we can say, in spite of some difficulties, it was a fantastic week. We returned with deep impressions and had unforgettable experiences. Above all, we were able to use our knowledge of English and learned a lot about everyday life in an English family.
